How are files exchanged with business partners in EDI? How do the different transfer types work? You can find easy-to-understand answers to these questions here.
In the second part of “EDI explained for beginners,” we provide easy-to-understand information about the options for file exchange. The most common transfer methods are presented.
AS2
AS2 is an abbreviation. It stands for “Applicability Statement 2.” The German term is “Anwendbarkeitserklärung 2”. AS2 is to the digital world what registered mail is to the analog world. Files are encrypted (no one can read them) and signed (so that the recipient can be sure that they really come from a specific sender) before being transmitted. The recipient sends back a confirmation of receipt, which serves as proof of transmission.
sFTP
SFTP is also an abbreviation, which can is based on the English term “Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol.” In German, this is translated as„sicheres Shel-Dateiübertragungsprotokoll“. File exchange via this transfer method works similarly to AS2, like a closed, secure envelope—but without confirmation of receipt.
400
The term originated in the early 1980s, when attempts were made to create globally standardized electronic mail systems – before today's Internet e-mail protocol (SMTP) became established. The transfer path works within a closed network, similar to AS2. More modern and cheaper alternatives, such as AS2 or SFTP, are replacing this approach.
